Second rough draft and darft text

Second rough draft of the layout and text of the magazine

I am not decided on the font of the subtitles or the layout, where the font reaches the models hair as the colours clash. I have not edited any of the text, including the mast head which will be behind the model, with the button ontop of the masthead. The headline will be wider to fit the whole page and thinner as not to cover so much of the main image. So far i think the variety of fonts and the layout is beginning to make the magazine look genuine, i will have to work on editing the text and the additional features.

First rough Draft of the layout

- consistent colour scheme
- some headline's and sell lines
- Issue of the Magazine

-advertisment and banners of relevant importance

First Sketch plan

Planning

First Sketch

I chose to do indie rock as my genre as it a very over looked sub-genre of rock however due to its individual style attracts a large variety of people, its also not typical music magazine you would see and i think it would be interesting to produce.

Masthead
My masthead is called ‘the hum’ for my music magazine, its short and catchy and has connotations to music, its also a bit odd which conforms to the individual unique style of indie rock.

It would be located at the top of the page, being partially covered by the model.

My headline would be
“Alicia Blue (new line) uncovers the myths and madness”

It would be located in the middle of the page, over the models torso.

My subtitles would be
“the strokes return, now better than ever”
 "Oasis"
"arcade fire"
"Get to know Ruta inside out"

It would be located in a gathering underneath the headline in a bullet point formation.

Some ideas for sell lines are
"terrific top 20"
"exclusive interview with surprise band"

Font ideas

I have selected a few fonts that correspond to my music magazines theme, i think that the first font is the most suitable as it is the most clear and striking.

Colour scheme

Font colours

the masthead would be black, this is so a the colour scheme can compliment both background and font. The subtitles and rest of the font will be white or yellow.

Main image
The main image would be of the singer 'Alicia Blue' who will be staring directly into the camera, slightly smiling as to not be seen as intimidating, as even as it is rock, it is indie which has a history of being known as the most irenic of all music genres.

The models face will cover the masthead emphasizing that the focus should be the main image.

The lighting is soft and mild, to keep the focus on the models face while still acknowledging the minimalistic mise-en-scene.

The mise-en-scene would be the models blue/turquoise leather jacket that really stands out in contrast to her black hair and neutral background. The model will have her hair slicked back into a tight high pony tail with fierce but not distracting makeup. The angle will be a center torso shot as to in-cooperate the mise-en-scene.

Vague inspiration was taken from these looks

Target audience
My target audience would be over 14's as indie rock is quite a unknown subgenre and so there is less of a likely hood of the younger generation being aware of it, so i will target the magazine towards the most common audience of indie rock being young adults, I will also be focusing on the female audience however all genders should feel comfortable reading it.

Interview on my music magazine and Questionnaire

Interview on my music magazine and Questionnaire

From this interview which i did to gain more information about my target audience appeals, i learned that my two interviewees wanted a front slightly side on torso shot of a female as the front cover, They also said that including the top music charts, interviews with stars and news and gossip would be suitable for my indie rock magazine. They recommended that merchandise and posters should be advertised on the magazine to make it more eye catching and attract more attention.

Ideas for front cover

I had some visual ideas about what my front cover of my music magazine is going to be like, i took some rough pictures so i can record them and selected the best three. I took these certain pictures so i could consider the mise-on-scene and cinematography later on when i take practice pictures of my model, so that when i have taken more pictures of my various other ideas i can pick the most suitable and chosen one.

Key band of Indie Rock- Arcade Fire

Key band of Indie Rock- Arcade Fire
Biography and development

Arcade Fire are a Canadian indie rock band based in Montreal, Quebec consisting of husband and wife Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, along with Win's younger brother Will Butler, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara. With two additional percussionists, Diol Edmond and Tiwill Duprate, and saxophonists Matt Bauder and Stuart Bogie.

Founded in 2001 by friends and classmates Win Butler and Josh Deu,the band released a self-titled EP in 2003 and reissued it in 2005. The band recorded their proper debut, Funeral in 2005, it was recorded after several band members had experienced the deaths of loved ones, with many songs which describe their emotions in their previous albums. The album's most famous track is "Wake Up," which was used in a number of important events.

The album was critically and commercially acclaimed. It appeared on many top ten album lists for 2004 and 2005 (due to delayed international releases), the MTV in 2005 Review crowned it the album of the year.

By November 2005, Funeral had gone gold in both Canada and the UK, and sold over half a million copies worldwide,a very large number for an independent release with minimal television or radio exposure.

A track officially released from new album Neon Bible was "Intervention" in December 2006, the proceeds from this release were dedicated to Partners in Health. The album gained much critical acclaim however the band was proclaimed “the most exciting act on the earth” by British music magazine “Q”, “one of the five best albums of 2007” by “Paste” and “Trouser Press” ranked Neon Bible "among the best indie rock recordings of all time."

Dedicated to Butlers' maternal grandfather, Alvino Rey, who was an amateur radio operator, the logo used by the band from this time was a variation of that used by the American Radio Relay League.
Arcade Fire performed at the 53rd Grammy Awards in February 2011. The band was nominated for Grammy Awards in three categories: Album of the Year, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and Best Alternative Music Album.

Arcade Fire also recorded a song for The Hunger Games soundtrack called "Abraham's Daughter" in 2012. The song is featured in the movies end credits. The soundtrack was released on March 20, 2012, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200.

At the 2014 Juno Awards, “Reflektor” won Album of the Year and Alternative (indie rock)  Album of the Year. The album was also a shortlisted nominee for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize. A documentary film called The Reflektor Tapes, about the making of the album, has been selected to be shown at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival.

Brief Indie Rock overview

Brief Indie Rock overview

The term indie rock, which comes from "independent," describes the small and relatively low-budget labels on which it is released and the do-it-yourself attitude of the bands and artists involved. Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom in the 1980s. Indie rock was extremely diverse, with sub genres that include indie pop, jangle pop, and lo-fi, among others.  In the 2000s, as a result of changes in the music industry and the growing importance of the Internet, a number of indie rock acts began to enjoy commercial success, leading to questions about its meaningfulness as a term.
In the mid-1980s, the term "indie" began to be used to describe the music produced on punk and post-punk labels. During the 1990s, Grunge bands broke into the mainstream, and the term "alternative" lost its original counter-cultural meaning. The term "indie rock" became associated with the bands and genres that remained dedicated to their independent status.  By the end of the 1990s indie rock developed a number of sub genres and related styles.

Indie rock became popular because the DIY beliefs surrounding it, it appealed largely to teenagers. The idea behind the genre is to bring the artists and the listeners closer than ever before. Instead of producer and consumer. The “open-mic” mindset appealed to everyone, everyone could be a part of the community as the indie sound was more “real” than pop, more intimate. Pop artists had access to the top of the line equipment, which often gave the music a crisp, clear sound. In contrast, indie artists, particularly grunge and hardcore musicians, sometimes played with high distortion on the electric guitar and/or recorded the whole track in one take, purposefully.

12/09/15 Editing my pictures for the magazine

Here i used Photoshop to merge the two most suitable pictures together. The idea was that the left represents social life and the right school life, as my magazine's title is "how to balance school life and social life" and so it links with the main focus image.
